Rigging

Experience is the best teacher...

river rigs for big catfish

sliprig.jpg

this is the simple rig used in river and lake fishing. It is the simplest rig to tie and use, the fish feels no resistance from the sinker till it's too late. (thanks to Jim Pauley for this picture)

This rig allows the bait more freedom in the strike zone. With a simple bobber stop and small float on the leader line you can adjust where the bait will float or you can just allow the bait to float natural in the water, this rig is used when the catfish are suspended off the bottom and inactive and you need to put the bait in their faces.(thanks to Jim Pauley for this picture)

This is a floating three way rig, it is used while drifting, or when over brush and stumps when a light touch is need to prevent hand-ups.

This is a 50qt. Coleman wheeled cooler with a 1x3 bolted to the sides with stainless steel 3/16 pan head bolts ,and fender washers on the inside, the two section of PVC pipe are attached to the 1x3 with pipe clamps or pipe holders, a divider can be made for the inside to keep the bait from the food, with a bag of ice and drinks this will make a good pole holder for any bank fishing area.

                Cooler Live Well

I use a 120 qt. coleman cooler for this and it works well but a smaller one can be used. I use a 500GPH bilge pump and a 24 inch section of PVC pipe with one end caped. I use #10x3/4 stainless steel sheet metal screws to attach the pump to the wall of the cooler. I then attach the 1/2 inch PVC pipe with 10, 3/16 inch holes drilled along it's length to the side or lid with pipe clamps in the same manner. I then attach the hose from the pump to the pipe and hook it up to a battery. I have a toggle switch on the pump wire to turn it on and off so as not to have to keep messing with the battery connection.

I dip out about 4 gallons of water every hour and replace it with fresh river water and turn the pump on for 15 min. every half hour. I have kept two 55#+ cats alive in this set-up for 5 hours with no problems
